Re-energising the Community Forum?

I understand the difficulties of creating a forum and then maintaining it, especially if you are making a living at the same time.

This 'product' that Andreas and Onno (w help from others Christian?) is a fabulous piece of work, but it seems to me,  having been a user for 4-5 weeks that people struggle to get started and need assistance.

This Forum, Discord and Facebook have clearly been active in the past but are getting little attention now.  Why is this?

Are people

  • content with the service and using it without issue?
  • giving up and going to some other OTA service?
  • moving away from Esressif?
  • unaware that they can help others?  Notifications of activity?

The concepts of IAS were not clear to me until I watched the video by Andreas #225 How-to Manage your ESP32 and ESP8266 over the Air (IOTappstory.com)  - This should be front and centre in the WIKI but I cannot find it!

So, the intent of this thread is to pose the question shouid we re-energise the Community Forum?  If so how?

Since I am now retired, I would be happy to assist where I can but would need some assistance from those with a deeper technical knowledge in certain areas.

  1. It would be good to reach out to all registered users to find out where they are now - I cannot do this but presume an admin can?
  2. I'll try to post this on the FB site and see if we can get a response
  3. It would be great to get an update from Onno and Andreas - plans, needs etc.  e.g. subscription model?
  4. Other ideas?

Hi Mick

Hope you are well.

I joined this site ages ago, also following a view of Andreas Spiess's YT post. I played with it for a while but didn't have anything ready to put out into "the wild" at that time, so I focused on my ESP HA devices within my local network and found easy ways to update them.

I liked the options to use a mobile to update local parameters. That would suite my use-case perfectly.

Much has changed in my designs in this time...

After much time and development I now have the first of 3 devices that I'd like to test with a few friendly neighbours that think I may be on to something.

So, I just came back to see what was happening here and re-familiarise myself with everything to see if it would still be a suitable way to manage my ESP devices in "the wild".

It seems awefully quiet.

My Chrome browser tells me I'm not on a secure HTTPS connection...

This doesn't bode well.

So is the site still active? Is Onno still involved? Are there active users?

I suppose what I'm really asking is should I put time and effort into using this or look for an alternative?

Cheers

Vitch

Hi Vitch

I did get a reply from Onno when I posted this and he said he was too busy to work on this at the time, but that he would be back in touch.

Since the, I have not used IAS, and have forgotten most of what I learned 🙁

My current project may not be compatible - I am trying to use PainlessMesh but OTA is not a major issue for me yet.

IAS is such a good product, it is a shame it is not progressing.

Since I have heard nothing from Onno, I guess that things are in hibernation!

Have you tried writting to iotappstory@gmail.com

Regards

Mick

Hi Mick

Thanks for getting back to me. I guess hibernating is better than dead!

I will ping the gmail address and see if anything happens.

In the meantime I may well go ahead and use it anyway, at least for testing purposes. My limited research recently hasn't found any reasonable alternatives yet...

I'll keep you posted on any developments.

Good luck with PainlessMesh. Must Google that.

Cheers

Hi Vitch

Were you successful with IAS?  _ See a bit of action on the Discord server recently!

After a lot of experimenting with PainlessMesh i gave up!  It took a lot to get a degree of stability but the main issue was transit time from device through the mesh to the cloud service - about 30seconds

For a security system I need quick response <10s max prefereably ~1second.

I am now getting back to IAS  - Wish me luck

Cheers
